Air For Life
AirForLife® is an emergency escape device that has been designed by firefighters. It is a portable, lightweight canister of oxygen that is the first product of its kind, with the ability to hold 22L of oxygen in a 66 x 220mm canister. Competitors, of similar size canisters can only hold 9L of oxygen. When trapped in an emergency situation, AirForLife® aims to add a vital 8-12 minutes of oxygen supply to aid in your rescue. Inside the canister is a granular, activated carbon adsorbent which releases cold oxygen allowing people to breathe in smoke or gas engulfed areas.
Unfortunately, 85% of fatalities from fire related incidents are due to being overcome by gas or smoke. Compared to air, high purity oxygen is better for eliminating carbon monoxide out of the blood as well as allowing for an easier resuscitation if required. This is why two experienced firefighters had the idea for a lifesaving product. Joe and Mathew had their idea but were struggling to execute it without compromising on the size of the canister. Just as they were on the brink of giving up they met Dr Tony Ryan, who created a widget which allowed for 22 litres of oxygen to be contained in such a portable canister.
The future at AirForLife® is bright. Working with Beeswift has already allowed them to start extending their product range. We are already looking into a refilling scheme. If a user has needed to use their AirForLife® they will be able to refill their canister at a reduced cost, effectively reducing waste as well. Kits are being made available which include, goggles and light sticks to aid in an escape. AirForLife® is working towards even smaller canisters that can easily be stored in handbags, homes and businesses.
Gas adsorption in activated carbon
- Air For Life contains a granular, activated carbon adsorbent.
- The activated carbon is specially designed to store a much larger volume of oxygen than could be otherwise stored using compression alone.
- The canister will still feel full even once it has been discharged.
- Users should release the oxygen, as and when they require to breathe, in order to waste as little oxygen as possible.
Why Oxygen, Not Air?
- Oxygen is the most important of all human needs.
- In a fire oxygen levels rapidly deplete. If the oxygen level drop below 15%, then filters alone (including filters found in smoke hoods) will not be sufficient in keeping a person alive. An external source of oxygen is the only way to survive such situations.
- Pure oxygen is more effective than air at purging carbon monoxide out of the blood.
- Someone who inhales pure oxygen will be more easily resuscitated since their tissues are heavily saturated with oxygen.
AirForLife® is a patented emergency escape device that provides the user with a self-contained oxygen supply (22 litres).
It gives the user a valuable oxygen supply in a situation where their oxygen supply has been significantly reduced or has become contaminated, for example during a fire, gas leak or terrorist attack.
The AirForLife® device enables the user to breathe for a more prolonged period of around 10 - 12 minutes, giving them time to escape or to be rescued and reducing any potential respiratory damage or failure, thus reducing the loss of life.
This product is for anybody who works or lives in a confined area, where access to the outside world in the event of an emergency may not be a quick process. For example, workers/residents who work/live in high rise blocks. Staff or commuters working/traveling underground.
AirForLife® would also benefit those less able or unable to evacuate themselves from an emergency situation, giving them valuable extra minutes. This could be from their place of residence or a commercial building depending on the situation at the time
